SEMAS | CMATHS Early Development

SEMAS South Africa, now trading as CMATHS, was established in 2005 and is an approved member of the Pan Pacific Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association of Taiwan Chamber of Commerce. CMATHS teaches Soroban Education to children between 3 and 11 years old. CMATHS , the abbreviated name of Calculating Mental Arithmetic Tuition with Help of a Soroban (Japanese Counting Frame) Its a Powerful Brain and Skills Development course aimed at not only improving children’s mental arithmetic ability, but also abilities like memorization, concentration, speed reading and listening, information processing, insight and fine motor movement (which is linked to intelligence). At the same time CMATHS aims at creating a love for Maths.

How does CMATHS work?

CMATHS enables learners to “see” Maths. Our aim is to accomplish whole brain development. CMATHS is much more than a mathematics course, it will also heighten the skill levels learners need throughout various learning areas, like comprehension, concentration, the ability to listen and pay attention, creativity and problem-solving.

Ultimately, CMATHS fosters a love of mathematics in children.

A session typically starts off with brain gym, as it achieves integration of the left and right brain hemispheres. Thereafter, we practice flash cards and speed writing. The kids move about, on the carpet, on their feet, then we’ll continually use the big soroban to familiarize them with the concept. Practicing finger exercises on the soroban will start to refine motor skills. This moves learning from the abstract to the concrete and helps them to grasp the notions of adding and subtracting, after which they will be able to step-up the numbers with which they are dealing.
